Each year, a group of concerned citizens comes together to form the Liberty and Union Weekend Committee. The committee's purpose is to promote and publicize the city's unique history. Though we are interested and involved in the promotion of all of Taunton's history, we especially highlight the events of October 21, 1774. On that date, Taunton became the first community in the colonies to raise a flag in stated opposition to British rule, when they raised the Liberty and Union flag. The First Parish Church and the Old Colony Historical Society co-host all the events. We intend to inform and educate the community about Taunton's history. It is our hope that by telling the story of past citizens, we promote pride in our remarkable history and inspire future community service to the entire area.
The Liberty and Union Committee continued to provide a connection with Taunton's students by adopting the Mulcahey Elementary School this year. This adoption included a gift of a Liberty and Union Flag, provided by the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lydia Cobb-Quequechan Chapter, to ensure that it is available to fly at that school. Members of the committee, including some members of the Rehoboth Minutemen, presented the flag to the principal, and spoke to the students about the event and related historical topics. The committee adopts one elementary school in this way each year. Exposing the children to the history of their community will help to give them a greater appreciation of the area as a whole. By telling the story of past citizens, we promote pride and inspire future community service.
